Abstract

The tribe Gaddi which is being studied is originally inhabits in Bharmour sub-division of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh. The word 'Gaddi' seems to have been derived from the word 'Gadar' a Hindi term for Shepherd or an eve; or from Gahar. 'Gahar' is an alpine pasture grazed in autumn. Modernization is a wide concept. Etymologically 'modernization' word originated from latin word 'modo' which means 'in vogue'. Modernization is the process of change towards those types of social, economic and political systems. The study area being heterogeneous inhabited by various groups of society, 'gaddis' live in the foothills of Dhauladhar mountain range and keeping in view widespread nature of their inhabitation, mixed approach of questionnaires and interviews was adopted based on random sampling.
