Abstract

Patriarchy is a social system in which men hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership and control of property . Patriarchy is associated with a set of ideas that acts to explain and justify this dominance and attributes it to inherent natural differences between men and women . In a patriarchal society women rights are not recognized . Violence against women occurred frequently . Violence against women may keep them locked in homes succumbing to the torture they face . This paper makes an attempt to discuss the role of women in a patriarchal society with reference to assamese society .
