Abstract
Adolescents account for one fifth of the world’s population and have been
on an increasing trend. In India they account for 22.8% of the population (as on 1st
March 2000, according to the Planning Commission’s Population projections).
This implies that about 230 million Indians are adolescents in the age group of 10
to 19 years. The term adolescent means ‘to emerge’ or ‘achieve identity.’
