Abstract
The Tungas were maṇḍala kingdom under the Sovereignty of the Bhaumakara in early medieval period of Odisha. The ruler of this dynasty proclaims themselves as hailing from Rohitāśi or Rohitāgiri and belongs to Śāṇḍilya gotra. The Rohitāgiri has been identified by some scholar with present Rohatashgar1 in Bihar. At least eight sets of copper plate grant have been discovered from Dhenkanal, Sundargarh districts of Odisha. The place names mentioned in the inscriptions can be located in Dhenkanal, Sundargarh and Keonjhar district, which indicate that the Yamagartta-mandala comprised of above three districts. However there is lack of unanimous opinion with regard to location of capital city Yamagartta-mandala. B. Mishra2 identified it with present Jamarḍiā near Angul or Jomurḍi in Pallahara. On the other hand N.K. Sahu3 located the capital with present Jamra or Jamirḍihi near the river Maṅkara in Pallahara of Dhenkanal district. The inscriptions of this family were issued from different places like, Mahaparavata and Jayapura-Kotta. According to the Dhenkanal grant4 Jayasimbha was regarded as the earliest ruler of Tungas dynasty.
