Abstract

Skin fairness products are sometimes referred to as skin whitening products, skin bleaching products and depigmenting agents. The relevance of skin fairness products to public health is highlighted by the scope of the industry, the widespread use of these products, and the potential health risks associated with their use. India presents a particularly interesting case example due to its large market share in the skin fairness industry and its ancient cultural notions of beauty and fairness, which have strong ties with caste and community biases, whereby fairer skin is preferred.
