Abstract

The potential for acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran has been an important area of concern for US foreign policy makers and the larger world community. In view of this, the nuclear deal with Iran-JCPOA, reached in 2015, was an important milestone. It met a critical US foreign policy objective of preventing further spread of nuclear weapons and upholding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime of which the USA is a key architect. This paper examines the circumstances in which the JCPOA was signed and what the two sides hoped to achieve from this agreement.
