DISABILITY AND THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY: DILEMMA OF MODELS

Abstract

The article deals with the basic understanding, types and problems of disability prevalent in societies and suggests the need to change the existing perception relating to the social, attitudinal, psychological and other issues considering the role of technology as paramount if not the final for the well being of the disabled persons. The problem varies from type to type and so does the solution in terms of both social and technological arenas. The article points out the possible betterment of disabled persons to get education and employment with the help of assistive technology. However, the article advocates a social model in the long run for the well being of disabled and not the medical model.
