Abstract

The efficiency of the banking system determines the pace of development of the economy. Similar to any other business enterprise, the efficiency of a bank is evaluated based on profitability and quality of assets it possesses. The asset quality is a prime concern and impacts various performance indicators, viz., profitability, intermediation costs, liquidity, credibility, income-generating capacity and overall functioning of banks. The reduction in asset quality results in accumulation of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs). As of April 2020, the twelve public sector banks recorded gross NPA worth of Rs.5.47 lakh crore and 19 private sector banks gross NPA is stood at Rs.2.04 lakh crore. As of September 2020, total amount of NPAs of Indian banks is stood at Rs.8.08 lakh crore.
