Abstract

Ancient India was the cradle for great philosophical speculations and literature. The philosophical insight of the sages comes in the Vedic texts, Upanishads, Smritis, Puranas, Itihasas etc. The Vedas reflected the philosophical insight of our ancestors which narrated the relationship between humans and gods and their role in the world. Puranas due to its quest for spiritual and temporal realms, is believed to be closely related to the Vedas. The intellectuals tried to explain spirituality, ethics and philosophy to the common man in the form of stories which took the form of Puranas.
